Glyde does not use shark cartilage

Beginning Monday, July 23, Discovery Channel’s Shark Week returns for its 30th year with over 19 hours of amazing shark programming built to “shark and awe” viewers. We can’t wait to tune in and see it for ourselves. We are shark fans too!

The Discovery Channel is encouraging all fans and shark enthusiasts to share their shark passion and insight online. Then it would be fitting for us, as makers of Glyde® Mobility Chews, to let you know how passionate we are about sharks and what we do our part to protect them.

Products that improve mobility, such as Glyde, use Chondroitin as a key ingredient. This ingredient can be obtained from fish, pigs, cattle, birds and shark. Proudly, we use the cattle cartilage as our main source for the Chondroitin. Here are our reasons:

  1. It is absorbed more quickly in the system than other resources.
  2. It is a by-product of the meat industry.
  3. It avoids harvesting cartilage from sharks.

However, there are some products still using shark cartilage for reasons they see fit. Being from Australia and New Zealand, we value our environment and do our part to protect our marine life. If you aren’t using Glyde, make sure your maker isn’t using shark cartilage either. Now that you know where Chondroitin comes from, here’s what it does:

  • Reduces pain, improves joint function and mobility
  • Reduces the progression of arthritis
  • Absorbs quickly in the system to relieve the signs of arthritis

Green Lipped Mussels (GLM) is the super-power ingredient in Glyde. As you already know, GLM comes from waters here in New Zealand. NZ also has the strictest quality assurance programmes for shellfish in the world as well as the best industry practices for growing and harvesting an environmentally sustainable product. We wrote all about the wonders of this small but mighty mussel in this article. In addition to the GLM and Chondroitin, we also use Glucosamine as the third key ingredient to fight the signs of arthritis. Here’s what it does:

  • Also reduces pain, improves joint function and mobility
  • Reduces joint space from further narrowing in joints
  • Deters cartilage from further degrading
  • Suppresses inflammation

So as you tune into #SharkWeek beginning on Sunday, remember at Parnell, we are doing our part to protect sharks in the sea. We do not and never will use shark cartilage in our products.

So what will you do to celebrate #SharkWeek? We are looking forward to the shows filmed off our coasts of New Zealand. Here’s to 30 great years of shark education around the world thanks to the Discovery Channel’s #SharkWeek!
