January Walk Your Human Month [A Dog's POV]

Written by Jessica Johnson | January 10, 2023

January is National Walk Your Dog Month and we wrote about all the tips you need to walk your dog. But what does your dog think of it all? We have the best excerpts to tickle your funny bone. Keep reading!

This funny meme is from your favorite furry friend on how to walk a human:

The Oatmeal Comics wrote and illustrated this hilarious post about walking a human.

Entirely Pets featured Rufus the dog, and Rufus wrote many reasons why you should take humans out for a walk. Rufus said:

"Hi everyone, Rufus here! Today I wanted to talk to all my fellow dogs about taking your humans for a walk in honor of National Walk Your Pet Month. Every dog knows that walking your human twice a day is good for your health and theirs."

One of our favorite parts of Rufus' essay is when he talks about smelling the smells:

"Half the goal of a walk is to smell all the great smells and explore unfamiliar territory. When walking with your human, they may forget that we find this part of the walk enriching. Humans forget to smell all the different grasses and don’t understand the need to mark every fire hydrant on the block."

In all seriousness, here are a few health benefits for dogs. But if you can see how they can be for humans too!

4 Health Benefits of Walking Your Dog (Or Your Human)

  1. Weight and body condition improvements. Obesity is a major health issue in dogs AND humans. Amazingly, according to the Association of Pet Obesity Prevention, 56% of dogs in the United States are obese. There are many consequences for being obese including, lack of energy which means an increase in lethargy. The same goes for our dogs.
  2. Joint health improvements. Have you noticed if you sit at a desk all day, then get up, you are a bit stiff? This happens to our dogs too. Immobility is a major health concern. Joints at any age need motion to improve their function. Health consequences for both humans and our dogs include sore and inflamed joints and arthritis may set in, as well as more serious health issues.
  3. Mental health improvements. It has been proven that getting outside and enjoying the fresh air and sunlight improves our mood and overall outlook on life. The same goes for our dogs. If they are inside all the time, you may notice more mischievous behavior. Mostly because they are bored and need some constructive activities such as walking.
  4. Rewards for good behavior. Our dogs love making us happy. When we are with them, they are happy. When we do things together they are happy and love the emotional bond created. Be sure to reward your walking partner with lots of love and snuggles.
